Pitcher Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets, beset during the 1986 season by rumors that he took drugs, met last summer with union head Donald Fehr, Gooden and Fehr confirmed.
The New York Times quoted sources as saying Gooden met three times with the union, at least once with a doctor present, to discuss the drug rumors. Fehr would neither confirm nor deny that the meeting had anything to do with drugs.
“Dwight had said that I saw him in St. Louis last summer,” Fehr said. “I confirm that I did see him. . . . I see players on the road all the time. I did not say what it was about, and it was not a specific trip to see Dwight.”
