Newport Beach : Engine Compartment of Boat Damaged by Fire
Fire broke out near the engine of a 23-foot power boat in Newport Harbor late Saturday night, charring the engine compartment but leaving the boat afloat, a spokesman for the Harbor Patrol said Sunday.
The vessel was being piloted by John Zampiello of Alta Loma in the Rhine Channel near the Cannery restaurant. The narrowness of the channel allowed Newport Beach firefighters to run hoses near the craft and help Harbor Patrol officers extinguish the blaze shortly before midnight Saturday.
There were no injuries, the spokesman said, and the cause of the fire was being investigated.
