Managers Jim Fregosi of the Chicago White Sox and Tony LaRussa of the Oakland A’s were selected to coach the American League team under Boston Red Sox Manager John McNamara in the All-Star game at Oakland July 14. National League Manager Davey Johnson of the New York Mets named Hal Lanier, manager of the Houston Astros, and Roger Craig, manager of the San Francisco Giants, to coach the NL squad.
