TARGETED CUTBACKS IN PUBLIC HEALTH CARE

Pending the outcome of a public hearing next week, here are the planned cutbacks in Los Angeles County health services that officials say may be necessary as a result of Gov. George Deukmejian’s state budget vetoes:

County-USC Medical Center

General Hospital/Women’s Hospital/Outpatient Divisions:

- Bed reduction: 141.

- Monthly outpatient visit reduction: 11,792.

- Eliminated services: gynecology, gynecologic-oncology, surgical, day care, family planning, dermatology, rehabilitation medicine, speech and podiatry.

Pediatric Pavilion/Outpatient Divisions

- Bed reduction: 106.

- Monthly outpatient visit reduction: 5,881.

- Eliminated services: dermatology, renal, diabetics, tuberculosis, failure to thrive, special problems, hematology and orthopedics.

Harbor-UCLA Medical Center

- Bed reduction: 106.

- Monthly outpatient visit reduction: 1,032.

- Eliminated services: general medicine, medical acute care and continuing care.

Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center

- Bed reduction: 7.

- Monthly outpatient visit reduction: 4,058.

- Eliminated services: medical triage, family practice, general medicine, cardiology, hypertension, dermatology, gastroenterology, neurology, diabetic, chest, hematology, renal, dental, urology and ENT.

Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center and Drug Rehabilitation Facility (Downey)

- Bed reduction: 194.

- Monthly outpatient visit reduction: 1,830.

- Eliminated services: liver, orthopedic, diabetes, plastic reconstruction, acute medical, stroke-neuro, ortho reconstruction, problem fracture, spinal deformities, drug detoxification and drug rehabilitation.

High Desert Hospital (Lancaster)

- Reduction of monthly outpatient visits: 991.

- Eliminated services: ophthalmology, endocrinology, oncology, dental and allergy.

Health Clinics, Rehabilitation Centers, Dental Facilities Targeted for Closure:

- Health Center Ambulatory Clinics: Pomona, Whittier, East Valley, Glendale, Canoga Park, Hollywood-Wilshire, Compton and Yvonne Braithwaite Burke.

- Drug Abuse-Suicide Prevention: California Detoxification Services, Los Angeles; Cornerstone Health Services, Pico Rivera; Eldorado Community Services Center, Inglewood; Health Care Delivery Services, Los Angeles; Suicide Prevention Center, Los Angeles; Suicide Prevention Center, Venice, and Western Pacific Medical Corp., Panorama City.

- Dental Services: El Monte, Hudson, Humphrey, Long Beach and Roybal comprehensive health centers.

- Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers: Acton and Warm Springs.

- Health Clinics: Bell Gardens, Culver City, Harbor-San Pedro, Pico Rivera, Burbank, Florence-Firestone and Monrovia.
