HAYDN: CONCERTO IN D; BOCCHERINI: CONCERTO IN B-FLAT. Jacqueline Du Pre, cello, Sir John Barbirolli conducting London Symphony Orchestra; Daniel Barenboim conducting English Chamber Orchestra. EMI CDC-7 47840-2 (compact disc). In these reissues of recordings made in the late 196)s, Du Pre gives memorable though no longer fashionably correct interpretations. Instead of crisp, tart playing, Du Pre luxuriates in lyric deliberation, evoking in Haydn’s concerto a sense of aristocratic grandeur, shaping phrases throughout with thoughtfulness and venturing into Romantic Angst, if with poise and restraint. Barbirolli accompanies with like-minded amplitude. Du Pre approaches the lightweight Boccherini concerto (in the spurious Gruetzmacher edition) with playful courtliness. Barenboim follows each nuance sensitively. Sound is bright, full, clear, though a bit dry.
