The brother of Brazilian race car driver Emerson Fittipaldi and another man were seriously injured when their car smashed into a light pole early Saturday, officials said.

James Fittipaldi, 29, of Los Angeles was driving west on Ventura Boulevard in Studio City about 2:25 a.m. when he crashed into a pole near Big Oak Drive, said Los Angeles Police Officer Cathy Pett.

Witnesses told police that the 1964 Corvette that Fittipaldi was driving had been weaving in and out of traffic at up to 65 m.p.h. before the accident, Pett said.

Fittipaldi was listed in serious but stable condition at County-USC Medical Center, officials said. He suffered a fractured right wrist, left ankle and possible broken ribs.

Fittipaldi’s passenger, John Duke, 34, of Chino, was listed in critical condition at St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank with multiple injuries, a hospital spokesman said.

Emerson Fittipaldi finished 16th in this year’s Indianapolis 500.
