John Cook shot a bogey-free, five-under-par 66 Saturday to take a one-stroke lead over Bobby Clampett in the third round of the $612,000 Anheuser-Busch golf tournament at Williamsburg, Va.

Cook, bidding for his first PGA Tour victory in four years, had a total of 199 entering today’s final round at the Kingsmill Golf Club.

Clampett, whose only Tour victory was the 1982 Southern Open, capped a round of 65 with birdies on four of his final five holes.

Mark McCumber’s 67 placed him two shots behind, tied at 201 with second-round leader Tim Simpson (69) and Scott Hoch (68).

Cook started the day one stroke behind Simpson but vaulted into the lead after three holes with consecutive birdies on Nos. 2 and 3. He birdied the 10th, 11th and 15th, then made his only save with a 10-foot par putt on the final hole.

Cook, of Rancho Mirage, Calif., has finished in the top 10 four times this year but not higher than sixth. His two victories in eight years on the PGA Tour were in the 1981 Bing Crosby National Pro-Amateur and the 1983 Canadian Open.

Clampett birdied seven holes--none requiring a putt of more than 15 feet--and made his only bogey on No. 13.

Gary Player shot a four-under-par 67 to take a two-stroke lead over Chi Chi Rodriguez in the $300,000 U.S. Senior Open at Fairfield, Conn.

Rodriguez, the PGA Seniors Tour’s leading money-winner in 1987 and seeking his sixth victory of the year, had carried a one-stroke edge into Saturday’s round but slipped to a 70.

Player was at 204 through 54 holes on the Brooklawn Country Club course.

Rodriguez, who three-putted the final hole for a bogey, was at 206. Bob Charles shot a 68 to tie Don Massengale for third place at 209.

Ayako Okamoto of Japan shot a six-under-par 66 in steamy 90-degree heat to take a six-stroke lead after three rounds of the $400,000 LPGA du Maurier tournament at Laval, Canada, 10 miles north of Montreal.

The Japanese veteran, looking for her 11th career victory, had a total of 200.

Jody Rosenthal was second at 206 after shooting a 68, while Rosie Jones, who shot a 69, was third, another stroke back.

Robin Walton broke Okamoto’s two-day-old Islesmere Golf Club course record with a 64 that included a pair of eagles on the front nine. She holed an 8-iron shot on the fly at the sixth hole and then hit a 3-iron shot from 182 yards out that curled into the cup on No. 9. Walton was in a three-way tie at 208.

Ian Woosnam capped a commanding four rounds of golf with a three-under-par 68 for a seven-shot victory over Peter Senior in the $320,000 Scottish Open at Gleneagles.

The 5-foot 3-inch Welshman’s 264 total was 20 under par on the 6,823-yard Gleneagles course.
