Charlton Heston and Peter Strauss will play father and son in “The Tall Men,” a TV movie for ABC. Heston portrays a conservative cattle rancher who is dying and seeks to reconcile with his son, who went AWOL in Vietnam.

A reunion between estranged father and son is also the nub of “A Hobo’s Christmas,” a TV movie for CBS starring Barnard Hughes of “The Cavanaughs” and Gerald McRaney of “Simon & Simon.” Only in this case, it’s the father who has been away--wandering the country for 20 years, working at odd jobs and riding the rails. The son is a policeman in Salt Lake City.

Glynnis O’Connor plays a woman caught up in generational problems in “Conspiracy of Love,” a movie that CBS will broadcast next season. In the film, O’Connor goes to court to get a restraining order that prohibits her father-in-law, played by Robert Young, from seeing her daughter, portrayed by Drew Barrymore.

The family from “Eight Is Enough” is getting together for a TV reunion, and now so is the family from “Family.” The Lawrence clan will be the subject of a TV movie for ABC next season, reuniting Sada Thompson, Gary Frank, Meredith Baxter Birney and Kristy McNichol from the series that ran from 1976 to 1980. Thompson’s mother character will be portrayed as a widow, reflecting the real-life death of former co-star James Broderick.

Opening ceremonies for the International Special Olympics will be spotlighted in a two-hour TV special for ABC on Aug. 3. Among the celebrities expected to appear are Whitney Houston, Susan Saint James, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Frank Gifford. The ceremonies, from Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind., kick off five days of athletic competition for mentally retarded athletes from 73 countries. Highlights from the Special Olympics will be broadcast on ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” Aug. 15.

Michael Young and Stepfanie Kramer will host the fifth annual Miss Teen USA pageant, which CBS will televise July 21. The winner will be crowned at the Civic Center in El Paso, Tex., by last year’s winner, Allison Brown of Oklahoma.

Fans of “General Hospital” will see one of the story lines move to Mt. Rushmore in August. The ABC soap opera recently taped segments at the national monument involving the characters of Terry Brock (Robyn Bernard) and Dusty Walker (Shaun Cassidy). The location shooting also included a chase sequence aboard an old railroad train.
