This note from Ralph Miller, who does pack trips into Yellowstone: “We know a Yellowstone few people have seen--travel by horseback to remote forests, watch sunsets from high mountains, swim in streams.” Miller obviously is a man in love with this corner of America. Says he’ll show you “untouched areas, follow behind elk and buffalo as they migrate.” Visits to Hoo Doo Basin, Cache Calfe Ridge, Mirror Plateau.

You have a choice of trips for one week, 10 days or two weeks. If you fly in, Miller picks you up in Billings, Mont., and delivers you to Cooke City via 11,000-foot Red Lodge Pass. The following morning the ride begins into the back country.

“It’s your trip and your pace,” Miller says. “I am simply the guide. If you’re an experienced rider or have never ridden before, the pace is still a walk.” Takes four hours to reach the campsite. Besides riding, vacationers fish, hike. Miller recommends you bring along a goose down sleeping bag. Trips (through September) come to $1,350 per week. Or if you’d prefer, Miller provides a drop-pack service that’s less expensive. Write to Miller, P.O. Box 1083, Cooke City, Mont. 59020, or telephone (406) 222-7809 or (406) 838-2310.
