East Wins in Basketball Giving Driesell a Victory

Elander Lewis and Dennis Scott scored 18 points each Sunday to lead the East to a 100-81 victory over the West in a men’s basketball game at the U.S. Olympic Festival.

Scott made two three-point shots, the second with 14:34 left that put the East ahead, 58-57. The East was in command from that point on and gave Coach Lefty Driesell his first victory in the Festival.

The West overcame a five-point deficit in the first four minutes and built a 34-22 lead. Tom Lewis of Pepperdine, helped the West’s early rally by making 10 points in the first 13 minutes.

The East later outscored the West, 18-2, to take a 40-36 lead before the West rebounded with baskets from Sean Higgins, Chris Gaines and Sean Rooks to retake the lead. At the half, the West had a 46-43 lead.

Frantz Volcy, who played a strong defensive game, Richard Dumas and Felton Spencer each added 11 points for the East. Lewis had 17 for the West, and Higgins and Rooks each had 10.

In a night game, the South, led by J.R. Reid and Brian Oliver, defeated the North, 75-66.

Dawn Bryant scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the East to a 68-55 victory over the West in a women’s game.

The East, which has no player taller that 6-foot-2, built a 43-28 halftime over the West, which has a front line of 6-8 Ellen Bayer, 6-4 Karen Deden and 6-3 Pauline Jordan.

In another women’s game, Tracey Rutledge made three free throws in the final four seconds as the South fought off a North rally and scored a 79-75 victory.

Rutledge made the second of a two-shot technical foul assessed against the North when it called an excessive timeout with four seconds left. When the South regained possession, Rutledge was fouled and made two free throws.

In men’s diving, Greg Louganis scored three 10’s on his final dive en route to winning the platform championship with 664.59 points.

Michele Mitchell of Deerfield Beach, Fla., the 1984 Olympic silver medalist, won the women’s platform title for the third straight year and broke her Festival record with 476.85 points. Mitchell missed breaking her American record by less than three points.

In boxing, world amateur featherweight champion Kelcie Banks of Chicago scored an unpopular 4-1 decision over Vernon McGriff of Buffalo, N.Y., to advance to the finals.

Frank Liles of Syracuse, N.Y., fighting at 156 pounds, provided an awesome display of punching power when he scored a technical knockout of Donnie Giron of Thornton, Colo., 27 seconds into the opening round.

In figure skating, Brian Boitano helped lead the West to victory in the men’s long program although he missed badly in his fourth attempt at making a quadruple jump. The North, helped by a strong long program by E. Rory Flack, was the overall winner with 638.18 points. Flack, the cousin of singer Roberta Flack, was the only skater not to miss a jump in the women’s long routine.

In cycling, 13-year-old Jessie Grieco of Emerson, N.J., won the 30-kilometer criterium. Grieco, won all four sprints during the 20-lap race through the streets of Raleigh.
