Tony Hill Gets a Better Offer From 49ers
Wide receiver Tony Hill, released last week by the Dallas Cowboys, declined an offer from the Rams and instead signed with the San Francisco 49ers Friday.
Hill, 31, reached agreement with the 49ers after visiting the team’s training camp in Rocklin, Calif., Thursday.
Hill was in Fullerton Wednesday and met with Ram Coach John Robinson, who expressed interest in signing the ex-Cowboy despite reports from Dallas that Hill’s weight had ballooned to 230 pounds.
But the Rams, not surprisingly, weren’t able to match the 49ers’ offer.
“The 49ers’ offer was much more lucrative,” Hill said at a news conference in Rocklin.
Hill, who was to have earned $425,000 this year with the Cowboys, said he is down to 213 pounds.
The news wasn’t all bad for the Rams, who announced the signing of four draft choices and veteran linebacker Mike Wilcher.
The team came to terms with third-round cornerback Clifford Hicks, fourth-round linebackers Larry Kelm and Doug Bartlett, and sixth-round tight end Jon Embree.
Remaining unsigned were second-round selection Donald Evans, fifth-round choice Scott Mersereau and 10th-round pick David Smith.
Ram veterans will report Sunday with four players unsigned--wide receiver Henry Ellard, tackle Irv Pankey, kicker Mike Lansford and tight end David Hill.
