Three Rams Are Now Official Holdouts

Share

As expected, Ram wide receiver Henry Ellard, tackle Irv Pankey and kicker Mike Lansford became holdouts Sunday night as they failed to report on schedule with the other veterans at the team’s training complex at Cal State Fullerton.

Not expected was the absence of cornerback LeRoy Irvin, who according to team officials was missing because of “personal reasons.”

A source, however, said that Irvin has stayed away to state his dissatisfaction over the three-year, $1.6 million contract extension he signed last April. Irvin, who has made the Pro Bowl the last two seasons, could not be reached for comment Sunday night.

Ram Notes The Rams on Sunday also signed fifth-round draft choice Scott Mersereau, leaving only second-round choice Donald Evans and 10th-round pick David Smith unsigned. Evans’ agent, Steve Weinberg, has sent a detailed letter to Ram general counsel Jay Zygmunt outlining his client’s position in the stalled negotiations. A copy was forwarded to Coach John Robinson. Negotiations will not continue until Zygmunt has read the letter, Weinberg said. It’s likely Evans won’t sign until five unsigned players drafted after Evans in the second round have come to terms. . . . The Rams leave next Sunday for London, with or without Evans. “We hope to get it done before London,” Weinberg said.
