Singer lost $20.2 million in the second quarter, contrasted with income of $21.8 million a year ago. The Stamford, Conn., sewing machine maker turned defense contractor blamed the loss on three programs involving high-technology guidance and navigation systems that required a pretax charge of $45 million because of cost overruns. Revenue for the quarter rose 4.4%.
