Fifty-six people, including three juveniles, were arrested on various drug, alcohol and assault charges Sunday at the Bob Dylan-Grateful Dead concert in Anaheim Stadium.

Police had assigned more officers than usual to the stadium, and even then “it was a super busy day,” said Lt. Del Wade, who oversees the department’s security operations at the stadium and Anaheim Convention Center.

“Our advance intelligence indicated the potential for problems existed,” Wade said. “That’s why we beefed things up a bit.”

Police arrested 28 people for public drunkenness, 20 for possession of drugs, including PCP and LSD, four on assault charges and four for trespassing. Another 25 concert-goers were ejected from the stadium during the daylong show for rowdy behavior, officials said. There were no reports of injuries.

The number of arrests was in sharp contrast with the Madonna concert at the stadium a week earlier, when just seven people were booked on alcohol, assault and drug charges.

“The Grateful Dead is an act that is going to attract the kind of element prone to use more drugs and alcohol,” Webb said. “We knew this, and we were ready.”

A year ago, Irvine police made 44 arrests and ejected 40 people during a Grateful Dead performance at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre.
