Driver in Crash May Have Been in Coma

A man who may have suffered a diabetic coma while driving his van struck and killed a motorcyclist Monday on Mast Boulevard in Santee, sheriff’s deputies reported.

Herman Kemp, 31, of San Diego, was dead at the scene, coroner’s deputies said.

The accident occurred near Mission Gorge Road about 7:45 a.m., when the westbound van weaved in and out of traffic before crossing into the eastbound lanes, striking the oncoming motorcyclist, officials said.

The van’s driver was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center. His identity was not released.

Two other vehicles were damaged in the accident, but the occupants were unharmed, sheriff’s deputies said. An investigation was continuing.
