The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency gave the Navy a green light to go ahead with its plans to base the battleship Missouri and its supporting vessels in San Francisco Bay. Judith E. Ayres, EPA regional administrator, said the Navy’s official final environmental impact statement has been reviewed and “we have concluded this project may proceed without significant impact to our unique environment or imminent and substantial endangerment to the health of San Francisco Bay citizens.” The EPA recommended, however, that only shallow dredging be allowed at the proposed Hunter’s Point berthing location because of underlying toxicity, and also pointed out that hazardous substances have been found on shore at Hunter’s Point.
