Hana Mandlikova and Helena Sukova won their respective singles matches as second-seeded Czechoslovakia defeated Sweden, 3-0, to advance to the second round of the Federation Cup women’s team tennis championship at Vancouver, Canada.
Also advancing was third-seeded West Germany, which got singles victories from Steffi Graf and Claudia Kohde-Kilsch in getting past Hong Kong, 3-0.
In other matches, sixth-seeded Argentina beat Switzerland, 3-0; the Soviet Union, seeded eighth, eliminated Israel, 3-0; unseeded Canada advanced over the Netherlands, 3-0; South Korea defeated Norway, 2-1; Yugoslavia beat Poland, 2-1, and New Zealand defeated Brazil, 2-1.
