A San Diego firefighter suffered second-degree burns on his face and shoulder Tuesday morning while battling a house fire in the 4300 block of 48th Street, officials reported.

Firefighter Michael Brown was treated for the burns and later released from the UC San Diego Medical Center.

Five members of a family who lived in the East San Diego house escaped uninjured.

The fire, which caused $130,000 damage to the small, one-story home, was started by children playing with a cigarette lighter inside a closet, according to San Diego Fire Department spokesman Larry Carlson.

The family lost all its personal belongings in the blaze and was planning to move in with relatives, Carlson said.

Twenty firefighters were called to the fire at 9 a.m. and controlled the blaze within 20 minutes, Carlson said.
