Jerry Robinson in Alcoholism Rehabilitation

Jerry Robinson, the Raider linebacker arrested for possession of cocaine, said Thursday that he has become involved in an alcoholism rehabilitation program.

“I did it for my own good,” Robinson said, as he and the other veterans reported to camp. “I had to sit down and take a hard look at myself. I realize I can’t drink anymore.

“This is something we (Robinson and the Raiders) are doing together. This is not the law doing this, or the league doing this.

“I’m fine. There’s a lot of support around here, from my teammates, the coaches, my family. There are those who are a little upset. I can understand that. Everybody’s entitled to their feelings.

“But people have been very supportive, which I need. When your name is flashed from Portland, Oregon, to Portland, Maine. . . . “

Robinson is scheduled to be arraigned in Torrance Municipal Court Aug. 18.

Said Coach Tom Flores: “He’s here, and I’m hopeful that the problems he has will be taken care of in his favor.”

Flores said Raider lineman Curt Marsh, who had gone back to El Segundo to have an ankle injury further examined, has a fracture.

Only the star-crossed Marsh could report early and get hurt again right afterward. A No. 1 draft pick in 1981 and the heir apparent to left guard Gene Upshaw, he suffered a back injury in camp in 1983 that cost him the entire season. He won his starting job back in 1984 but in 1985 broke a bone in his forearm early in camp and left the lineup again.

He opened last season as the starting right guard but broke a finger at Washington in warm-ups before the second game of the season. He went on injured reserve and wasn’t activated later when he was ready to play.

The question this season was whether Al Davis had already had enough.

“Curt Marsh is always in the picture,” a Raider official said. “Everybody likes him, he works hard and he’s a tough son of a gun. But whether or not you can start him is another question. The bottom line is you have to stay healthy.”

And that was before this injury.

Elvis Franks, the veteran defensive end arrested for drug possession and intent to distribute in Cleveland, did not report, although his way had been cleared legally.

“The court allowed him to report if he wanted to, and if we wanted him to,” Flores said. “We have asked him to remain in Cleveland until something has been settled. . . . His offense is entirely different than Jerry Robinson’s.”

Raider Notes

None of the three unsigned veterans--Don Mosebar, Shelby Jordan and Bruce Davis--reported. Davis drove to camp and said he expected to sign within the next few days. Players aren’t allowed in camp unless they’re signed, however, and Davis was told he couldn’t stay.
