Big Ten football coaches, saying it would open “a can of worms,” voted unanimously to urge the National Football League not to hold a special draft for Ohio State receiver Cris Carter.

Carter was ruled ineligible earlier this month by OSU after it was learned that he had signed a contract with an agent. Carter, an All-American receiver with the Buckeyes who would have been a senior this year, indicated he would enter his name for a special supplemental draft.

The NFL has yet to rule on holding a supplemental draft for Carter, similar to the one they held earlier this year for former Oklahoma All-American Brian Bosworth.

The coaches said they wanted to prevent agents from luring their players into early signings.

Michigan’s Coach Bo Schembechler said: “We unanimously believe that Ohio State acted properly in their actions, and we hope the NFL won’t open up a can of worms by allowing a special draft (for Carter) to participate in the NFL this year.”
