A motorist told police Friday night that she believes she was shot at on the Santa Ana Freeway in Irvine by someone in a tailgating pickup truck.

However, the California Highway Patrol and the Irvine Police Department said they could not confirm that a shot had been fired and said that an investigation was continuing.

The unidentified motorist was not hurt, and there were no bullet holes in her car, Irvine police Sgt. Dave Freedland said. Irvine police were called in by the CHP to investigate after the CHP had made the initial inquiry.

Freedland said the woman told officers that about 9:50 p.m. she was northbound on the Santa Ana Freeway when a red pickup truck started tailgating her car.

She said she saw “a bright muzzle blast,” like a gunshot as the truck passed her, and she believed someone had shot at her, Freedland said. The woman left I-5 at the the Jeffrey Road exit and notified police.
