Collins of England Wins Scratch Event

Phil Collins of England won the four-lap scratch main event Friday night in the weekly speedway motorcycle racing program at the Orange County Fairgrounds at Costa Mesa in front of a crowd of 3,467.

Collins and Alan Christian of Huntington Beach, who finished second, battled for the first two laps, but Collins pulled away in the last two. Steve Lucero of Riverside was third and Bobby Schwartz of Costa Mesa, who had won 10 of 12 scratch mains at the Costa Mesa track this season, finished fourth.

Louis Kossuth of Anaheim won the eight-lap handicap scratch main.
