POP GOES AN EVENING

As two of the 15,000 who saw neither John Williams nor the Boston Pops at the Hollywood Bowl, we would like to voice our objection to the misleading advertising for this recent event. The ads read “Boston Pops” . . . “John Williams and the Boston Pops” . . . “Boston’s favorite band” . . . “the Pops orchestra that started it all” etc., etc.

In each ad, however, some place in small print, the word Esplanade was inserted between Pops and orchestra , no doubt to satisfy the legal obligation to tell the truth. But the intent of the advertising campaign was to make the public believe they were going to see the famous Boston Pops, not a touring group.

It is a sad commentary on our society when truth, even in the arts, is defined in legal rather than moral terms. The Hollywood Bowl should know better and act better!
