BASEBALL MISCELLANY

NUMBERS Tom Niedenfuer: The former Dodger, since joining Baltimore, has enhanced his reputation as a relief pitcher who should not be allowed to go more than one inning. In first innings of work with the Orioles, he has allowed only 4 earned runs in 19 innings. In 13 later innings, he has allowed 15 earned runs.

Ozzie Smith: The St. Louis shortstop has driven in 55 runs without hitting a home run. Cleveland third baseman Brook Jacoby has hit 20 homers and driven in only 42 runs, Kansas City outfielder Bo Jackson has hit 20 and driven in only 48, and Atlanta catcher Ozzie Virgil has hit 21 and driven in only 44.

Gerald Perry: The Atlanta first baseman has stolen 24 bases. In the last 65 years, only three first basemen have reached the 30-steal plateau: Rod Carew, who stole 49 for Minnesota in 1976; Cesar Cedeno, who stole 30 with Houston in 1979, and Dan Driessen, who stole 31 with Cincinnati in 1977 and set a family goal for Perry, his nephew.

Mike Scott: The Astro pitcher is 28-13 against the rest of the National League over the last two seasons but 0-4 against the Braves.

Charlie Kerfeld: The flaky Astro relief pitcher was fined $250 last week after being found eating ribs in the bullpen at Shea Stadium.

Steve Ontiveros: The American League’s pitcher of the month with a 5-0 record in June, the Oakland right-hander was 0-4 in July.

Bob Kipper: The former No. 1 draft choice of the Angels, traded to Pittsburgh in the John Candelaria and George Hendrick deal, was optioned to Vancouver, having allowed 24 homers in 105 innings.

Andre Dawson: There’s a night-and-day difference in the Chicago Cubs right fielder, which is why he wanted to play his home games at Wrigley Field. Dawson, through Thursday, was hitting .317 with 20 homers and 63 RBIs in day games and .248 with 7 homers and 22 RBIs in night games.

Bobby Witt: The Texas sophomore will be making his 45th major league start tonight and is still looking for his first complete game. Among active pitchers, Steve Bedrosian, now strictly a relief pitcher with Philadelphia, has made the most starts, 48, without a complete game.

Mike Stanley: The Texas catcher has thrown out only 2 of 50 opposing base stealers. Ranger catchers are 0 for the last 30.

John Marzano: The former Temple catcher replaced the injured Rich Gedman on the Boston roster and became the 14th member of the 1984 Olympic team to reach the majors.

The Dodgers: If that 6-7 home stand didn’t defuse their second-half comeback hopes, consider this: They have 59 games remaining, 31 on the road, where they have a 19-31 record. They play 19 of the 31 road games on artificial turf, where they are 5-22.

Eric Davis: The Red center fielder hit a total of 19 homers in April and May but only 10 in June and July.

The Kansas City Royals: Don’t ask them to vacation in New York. They were 0-6 at Yankee Stadium this year and are 3-21 there since the conclusion of the Pine Tar Game Aug. 18, 1983.
