About 3,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled from Point Loma into San Diego Bay Monday, public health authorities reported.

The spill occurred near Kellogg and San Gorgonio streets when a sewer pipe became clogged with tree roots, according to county health educator Cheri Eir.

Pressure forced sewage from one ruptured pipe to the street surface through a crack in the pavement. The sewage then flowed into a storm drain that empties into the bay at the foot of Kellogg, Eir said.

A distance of 100 yards along the bayfront was posted with contamination warning signs, Eir said. County health workers will test samples of the contaminated water daily until its quality reaches a safe level for swimming, Eir said.
