Auburn may have violated NCAA rules when an assistant coach bailed quarterback Jeff Burger out of jail last month after Burger was arrested during a brawl at a restaurant, the Alabama Journal reported.

Auburn quarterback coach Pat Sullivan, a former Heisman Trophy winner, posted $700 bond to free Burger after he was arrested on July 14 in the parking lot of the restaurant on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and public intoxication, the newspaper said.

It quoted Rick Evrard, director of NCAA Legislative Services, as saying that posting bond for a student-athlete is a violation of the NCAA’s constitution.

The intoxication charge was later dropped when Burger pleaded guilty to the weapons count. He was fined $50, plus $32 in court costs.
