Whoopi Goldberg is queen of the rental market right now. Her dramatic film, “The Color Purple,” surged to the top of the Billboard magazine rental chart. Her comedy, “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” (No. 10 this week) has been a Top 10 fixture for the last nine weeks. Other rentals: “ ‘Round Midnight” (No. 28) has been a mild rental hit, and the newcomer “Something Wild” (No. 19) has Top 10 potential; but “Allan Quartermain and the Lost City of Gold” (No. 21) is off to a so-so start. On the sales chart, steady-selling “Jane Fonda’s Low Impact Aerobic Workout” has reclaimed the No. 1 position. Which means that, for the first time since it entered the sales chart in March, “Top Gun” is not top dog. Other sales charts notes: Disney’s “Here’s Mickey!” heads the kidvid chart; R.E.M.’s “Succumbs” is the No. 1 music videocassette.

* This Rob Reiner-directed comedy/drama of youth and discovery, at No. 17 this week, has been one of the most durable rental hits of the year. It’s been on the chart 19 weeks and shows signs of lingering in the Top 20 for at least a few more weeks.
