Torrance : Torrance Takes the Red Car

Share

The City Council took the Red Car this week. The fare was $6,000.

At issue was Pacific Electric Red Car 4601, one of the trolleys that used to crisscross Los Angeles County.

Its owner, Virginia Wilson, whose family lived in it from 1947 until 1963, offered to donate it to Torrance if the city would move it. She is building a house in the 3800 block of Newton Street on the lot where it sits.

City officials, who are planning the 75th anniversary celebrations of Torrance’s founding later this year, said they were delighted to learn about the Red Car and wanted to preserve it.

The City Council approved spending up to $6,000 to move the car from the Wilson property. Plans to restore and exhibit the old trolley have not been completed.
