San Marino : Temporary Classrooms
Several temporary classrooms will be moved to Huntington Junior High School before school opens Sept. 9 to take the place of 10 classrooms that were closed because they did not meet safety standards.
Supt. David Brown said the district cannot afford to pay the $30,000 to $50,000 it would cost to strengthen the walls and ceilings of the old classrooms.
The classrooms were closed last year when the district discovered that their construction had never met Field Act earthquake safety regulations imposed in the 1930s. Last year the school’s 650 students used the remaining 25 classrooms and partitioned spaces in the gym and library.
Brown said the district will receive $222,000 from the state for a new roof for San Marino High School but that the state has not approved additional funds for Huntington School. The temporary classrooms, which can be relocated, will be rented at low cost, he said.
