Cable television is coming to southwest La Canada Flintridge.

The La Canada Flintridge City Council voted Monday to grant Sammons Communications a 15-year franchise to provide cable television to an area south of Foothill Boulevard, west of Chevy Chase Drive and southwest of Berkshire Place. That means the entire city will have access to cable.

Sammons already offers cable to areas north of Foothill Boulevard and west of Angeles Crest Highway. The agreement renews that contract and adds the southwest area to give Sammons service rights to two-thirds of the city.

Falcon Cable Television provides cable to homes north of Berkshire in the city’s northeast and was not interested in expanding, city officials said.

Bids were submitted by Sammons, a Glendale company, and Crescenta Valley Cable, a La Crescenta company. Although both offered the city 5% of annual revenue as a franchise fee, officials said they chose Sammons because it is larger and more experienced.

Cable may become available in some southwest homes in four months. The entire area is expected to be hooked up by early 1989, Fullmer Chapman, the city’s director of public works, said.
