The first African pumpkin fly to be found in North America has appeared in Cerritos, state and Los Angeles County agricultural officials said. The fruit fly, of the species Dacus bivittatus , is prevalent in Africa south of the Sahara and attacks squash, melons and pumpkins as well as tomatoes and papayas. After the discovery of the male fly in a trap on Monday, the California Department of Food and Agriculture and the county Agricultural Commissioner said the density of detection traps has been increased in the surrounding 81-square-mile area.
