One day after San Jose officials decided not to adopt an ordinance banning pit bull terriers, a pit bull named Brutus attacked and bit a local woman, police said. Gloria Banuls was treated at a hospital after the dog lunged from a yard and bit her on the leg, Police Sgt. Dwight Messimer said. A 14-year-old boy ran out of the yard after the woman was bitten, grabbed the dog and chained him, Messimer said. The dog was taken away by animal control officers but probably will be released to the owner, he said. The San Jose City Council had considered banning pit bulls, but instead decided to refer the matter to City Atty. Joan Gallo for research on what can legally be done to prevent further attacks.
