Divers Seek Cash and Gems in Ship’s Safe

PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. — Treasure hunters embarked on a marathon dive into the hull of a sunken luxury liner Thursday in quest of a purser’s safe believed to contain $1.5 million in cash and jewels.
The afternoon dive took advantage of slack tides at the entrance to Puget Sound and could be the best chance yet to recover the safe and other valuables from the steamship Governor, which sank on April 1, 1921.
The divers planned to be under water until early today, said Yvonne Pepin, spokeswoman for Maritime Ventures, the investor group financing the treasure hunt with hopes of recovering up to $8.5 million in gold, currency, jewels and artifacts.
Two divers took advantage of calm seas Wednesday to probe inside the hull of the 420-foot ship lying in 240 feet of water in Admiralty Inlet. Nearly 150 artifacts were recovered.
