A Los Angeles man turned himself in to authorities Thursday after he allegedly led a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer on a high-speed chase on the San Bernardino Freeway and on downtown-area surface streets, then eluded a police dragnet during which he was wounded by officers.

Charles Williams, 22, accompanied by his lawyer, surrendered at the Police Department’s Rampart Division station and was booked for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, police said.

The chase ended in the Mid-Wilshire area, police said, when the motorist abandoned his car near 2nd and Reno streets. Williams was wounded in the shoulder when he allegedly pointed a gun at pursuing officers.

Although Williams eluded officers, another man at first thought to be the driver was arrested during the search after tear gas was fired into a house.
