Bombini Wins Second Stage of Hawaii Race
Emanuele Bombini of Italy broke away from a pack of five riders with 13 miles left and rode to a solo victory Thursday in the second stage of the Coors bicycle race.
Bombini, 28, completed the 118-mile Hilo-to-Waimea road race in 5 hours 37 minutes.
Ron Kiefel, 27, of Boulder, Colo., finished second, 29 seconds behind the winner. Alan McCormack, 31, of Ireland was third.
Raul Alcala, 23, of Monterrey, Mexico, won both of Wednesday’s events--the 2.8-mile Hawaiian Surf Prologue time trial in 6 minutes 20 seconds, and the first stage, a 122-mile road race, in 4 hours 48 minutes 12 seconds.
Today, the field of nearly 60 riders will compete in the 47-mile Hilo Criterion. The race will continue with stages in California, Nevada and Colorado.
