A tractor-trailer piled high with heavy construction equipment struck an overpass on the San Diego Freeway near Irvine at 1:15 a.m. Saturday, causing extensive damage and closing northbound lanes for seven hours, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The truck hit the beams on the Irvine Center Drive overpass, which is under construction. About 60 feet of the overpass was damaged, leaving steel and wooden debris scattered across the road, officers said. The driver of the truck fled and is being sought by police.
The northbound lanes were reopened just before 8 a.m. while crews were clearing up the area.
Two minor injuries were reported, the CHP said. A man and a woman, whom police did not identify, were treated at Saddleback Community Hospital and released after their subcompact car hit two steel support beams that were in the roadway.
