Twenty-three people have been arrested, face criminal charges or have lost job responsibilities for their involvement in China’s worst forest fire in 40 years, the official New China News Agency said. Six workers are charged with directly causing the blaze, which broke out May 6 in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, and 17 people holding county or district level posts are either under arrest or have had their responsibilities curtailed, the agency reported. The fire, which burned 2.5 million acres, lasted until June 2. An estimated 193 people were killed and 226 were injured.
