New Los Angeles Mail Facility to Be Completed in 18 Months
The Los Angeles General Mail Facility--the nation’s largest single-level mail-processing center--will swing into operation in South-Central Los Angeles in February, 1989.
The 74-acre complex, bordered by Gage, Central and Florence avenues, will have 1.1 million square feet of space and house 4,100 employees. The main building, with its 635,000-square-foot floor, is about the size of 10 football fields.
Los Angeles Postmaster Charles W. King and his administrative staff will move into the building in July, about seven months before the plant becomes fully operational.
Albert C. Martin & Associates of Los Angeles is the architect/engineer for the new building, and Paul L. Kelly is project manager for the U. S. Postal Service.
The new facility will process about 6.5 million pieces of mail a day. Once the move into the new complex is complete, the Postal Service will retain the lobby at Terminal Annex but market the remainder of the property.
A spokesman for the Postal Service said the 48-year-old Terminal Annex is outdated and too small for today’s mail volume.
