Another Goal Is Available to Bo

After Bo Jackson leads the Raiders to victory in the Super Bowl and then plays in the Pro Bowl, what’s he going to do until the Kansas City Royals open spring training?

Tim Leiweke has thought of that. He’s the president of the Kansas City Comets of the Major Indoor Soccer League, and he’s prepared to offer Jackson a contract.

“It’s a good hobby for three weeks,” he said.

And what would Jackson play?

“Anybody with that much athletic ability we’ll use in goal,” Leiweke said.

Aren’t we spreading Bo a little thin?

“Yes, we have to draw the line,” Leiweke said. “We’ll put in a clause that he can’t play in the NBA.”

Notre Dame football Coach Lou Holtz said he will miss Gene Corrigan, who left as athletic director to become commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

“He was the ideal athletic director,” Holtz told Larry Guest of the Orlando Sentinel. “He was a great person to work for, he was a great competitor and I could beat him in golf.”

Add Holtz: Of No. 1 quarterback Terry Andrysiak, he said: “I told Terry I’m not looking for another starting quarterback. But I wasn’t looking for a wife when I found the one I have.”

Trivia Time: Chuck Stobbs, former Washington Senators pitcher now doing commercials for the Maryland state lottery, is the answer to what trivia question? (Answer below.)

Wait a Minute: Said Oklahoma football Coach Barry Switzer: “We haven’t had a great runner since Billy Sims.”

Maybe Switzer doesn’t want to remember Marcus Dupree, since he quit school. Dupree holds the Sooner record for most yards rushing in a bowl game, netting 239 yards in 17 carries, a 14.1 average, in the 1983 Fiesta Bowl against Arizona State.

Steve DeBerg, who backed up Joe Montana at San Francisco, John Elway at Denver and Steve Young at Tampa Bay, says of Tampa Bay rookie Vinny Testaverde: “He’s very, very similar to Elway. They are the two most raw-talented quarterbacks I’ve ever worked with. Both have very strong arms and good quarterback instincts.”

Jim Harbaugh is a rookie, but the quarterback from Michigan didn’t act like one after Richard Dent and Dan Hampton tried to work him over in a Chicago Bears scrimmage.

He pushed Dent in the face mask, in fact.

Harbaugh said Dent and Hampton had been telling him he was scrambling too much.

“Basically, I told them to mind their own business,” Harbaugh said.

Said Coach Mike Ditka: “Jim Harbaugh didn’t pick up the paper and read how good these guys are. He challenged somebody.

“If that guy can get us to the Super Bowl, I’m going to be on his side.”

18 Years Ago Today: On a day off after a three-game sweep by the Astros in Houston, the New York Mets fell into third place, 9 1/2 games behind the Chicago Cubs. The Mets went on to win the pennant.

Trivia Answer: He threw the pitch on April 17, 1953, at Griffith Stadium that Mickey Mantle hit 565 feet for the longest measured home run in major league history.
