Roberto Gaggioli of Italy won the 10th stage of the Coors International bicycle race, taking the 22.5-mile Reno Twilight Criterium in a time of 47 minutes Thursday night.

Doug Shapiro of Burlingame, Calif., was taken to a local hospital after reinjuring his left leg in a first-lap crash. Shapiro fell into a retaining pole on the backside of the three-quarter-mile course in downtown Reno. Five other riders were involved in the accident but escaped unhurt.

Shapiro, 27, a three-time competitor in the Tour de France and winner of this race in 1984, suffered a broken bone near his hip and is expected to miss at least two months of competition.

Several laps after Shapiro’s accident, the race was delayed for 15 minutes while medical personnel administered to Shapiro before he was taken to a local hospital. The original 30-mile race was shortened to 22.5 miles, with all laps before the incident disallowed.

Earlier Thursday, Sauro Varocchi of Italy won the 98-mile Squaw Valley-to-Reno road race, the ninth stage, in 3 hours 55 minutes 51 seconds. Varocchi, 26, rode alone for the final 70 miles of the course.

Amateur Chris Bailey, 19, of Boulder, Colo., finished second, 70 seconds behind the winner.

Overall race leader Jeff Pierce, 29, of San Diego, finished 11th and 15th to maintain his 4:33 edge over Raul Alcala of Mexico.
