Countywide : 4 Persons, 2 Groups Nominated for Awards

Four Orange County residents and two local organizations have been nominated to receive the Presidential Recognition Award for Community Service.

The award honors private initiatives and public-private partnerships to solve serious community problems. The nominees, chosen by Rep. Robert Badham (R-Newport Beach) are:

- Patricia Krone of Newport Beach. She has served on the Orange County Human Relations Commission, the Discovery Museum of Orange County, the Orange County Coast Assn. and Vietnamese Community Senior Citizens Acculturation Center Project.

- Bill Hamilton of Newport Beach. Hamilton founded and has financed Clean Harbor Day, a communitywide event to clean up Newport Harbor.

- Jerry King of Newport Beach, a government relations expert who has worked as a volunteer at several nonprofit organizations.

- Lawrence Werner of Costa Mesa, former president of the Boys’ Club of the Harbor Area. Werner has also worked with the Orange American Youth Soccer Assn.

- The Food Distribution Center which serves as a clearinghouse to collect surplus food and distribute that food to local charitable agencies. In 1986, 935 volunteers worked 26,734 hours to assist 200 agencies serving 98,000 people a month.

- The National Foundation of Wheelchair Tennis which provides opportunities for disabled people to enjoy competitive sports.
