Atlanta Drug Investigator Transferred

The commander of the police agency that investigated drug-use allegations against prominent Atlantans, including the mayor, has been transferred to an administrative post.

Public Safety Commissioner George Napper said last week that Maj. Herman Griner will move from head of the Special Intelligence Section to the Field Operations Division, where he will aid in staff work and planning of police activities at next year’s Democratic National Convention.

Napper refused to say whether the transfer was related to the investigation of allegations by Alice Bond, wife of former state Sen. Julian Bond, that her husband, Mayor Andrew Young and other prominent residents had used cocaine.

A federal grand jury investigating the charges has cleared Young. No report has been made yet on Bond or any others.
