Tennis Roundup : Rain Causes Postponement of Semifinal Matches at Montreal
Rain forced postponement of both semifinal matches Saturday at the $375,000 Player’s International tennis tournament at Montreal.
The two semifinals, matching top-seeded Ivan Lendl against Jimmy Connors and defending champion Boris Becker against Stefan Edberg, were rescheduled for this morning, with the winners meeting in the final at 2 p.m. EDT.
The tournament has been plagued by bad weather since Friday, when showers caused numerous delays in quarterfinal matches. The showers returned Saturday and, after waiting for more than three hours, tournament officials postponed the semifinals.
At Prague, Czechoslovakia, third-seeded Tomas Smid and fourth-seeded Marian Vajda won in the semifinals of the $180,000 Cedok Open to make it an all-Czech final today.
Vajda defeated the last foreigner left in the only Eastern bloc stop on the Nabisco Grand Prix, stopping Guillermo Vilas of Argentina, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Smid eliminated unseeded Jaroslav Navratil, 6-1, 7-5.
At Saint Vincent, Italy, Francesco Cancellotti of Italy and Pedro Rebolledo of Chile overcame swirling winds to advance to the final of a $117,000 Grand Prix tournament.
Cancellotti scored a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Paolo Cane, ranked No. 1 in Italy. Rebolledo, ranked 154th in the world, needed only 65 minutes to oust Italy’s Claudio Pistolesi, 6-1, 6-4.
