Senator’s Wife Tours Five Acres Facility

ON THE SCENE: Gayle Wilson, wife of Sen. Pete Wilson(R-Calif.), counts child-abuse programs as a primary interest. Tuesday she was getting a thorough tour of Five Acres, the Boys and Girls Aid Society residential treatment center in Altadena, from William Nolan, board president; Daniel McCluer(, board member; Bob Ketch, executive director, and Chris McKenzie, director of the family resources center. Susan Rhodes, San Marino Auxiliary leader and fund-raiser familiar with Five Acres goals, also accompanied her.

PLAUDITS: Security Pacific has been selected to receive Los Angeles Arts Council’s eighth annual Armand Hammer Award. Richard J. Flamson III, chairman and CEO, will accept the prestigious honor at a Century City luncheon Dec. 1. Dr. Hammer will make the presentation. Security Pacific is being saluted for enriching the workplace with its 9,000 works of art by contemporary American artists, for its ongoing fine arts exhibitions in its Gallery at the Plaza and for more than $900,000 awarded to cultural institutions in 1986.

THE SCENE: Jeffrey and Erin Butler (home base New York) gathered California friends, an intimate group of about 60, at Jimmy’s to celebrate the birthday of the legendary New Jersey banker Mary Roebling. And, this is how intimate: Leslie Davidson paid tribute to Mary with an original “Hollywood Salutes Mary” script. Arlene Dahl and Jane Withers sang, and so did the Butlers. Twin grand pianos played by Stan Freeman and Forrest Perrin accompanied Carol Channing in a personal salute. Anne Jeffreys produced “Send In the Clowns.” The highlight was when the Butlers read the front page of that day’s Trentonian announcing that the State of New Jersey Department of Commerce Building will be named in Roebling’s honor.

DEB SALUTE: Lisa Lee Laritson, a National Charity League of San Fernando Valley debutante, was feted by her aunts--Elizabeth Slayton, Virginia Krodell and Diane Hilty--at a luncheon at the Bel-Air Bay Club this week. She’s a fourth-generation Californian and a great-granddaughter of Earl B. Gilmore, pioneer oil developer.

AUGUST AGENDA: Members of the Hispanic Women’s Council, Inc. staged their first Fiesta 100 this week--100 tickets at $100 each, 100 prizes. Gil and Margarita Moret were hosts in San Marino. Proceeds will go toward developing leadership skills and social consciousness of women, particularly in education, career development and motivation techniques.

He’s from Corona del Mar and is president of the newly-formed Inverness Group . . . to Marlene Billington, new president of Encore, composed of past presidents of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra support groups . . . to the Assistance League’s Day Nursery supporters who netted $41,000, says Gloria Holden, with the America’s Cup opening polo festivities in Carpinteria. And speaking of polo, the American Polo League and the Professional Polo Assn. collaborate on a luncheon Wednesday at the Los Angeles Equestrian & Polo Center in Burbank.

LIZA SPANGLES: Liza Minnelli gets prime attention Friday from the Film Advisory Board and its founder/president Elayne Blythe. She’ll be feted at an awards luncheon at the Hollywood Roosevelt for “Minnelli on Minnelli: Liza Remembers Vicente,” the Jack Haley Jr. production. The board also will spotlight the ABC Special, “A Star Spangled Celebration,” and the KHJ special, “A Salute to Hollywood.”

SUMMER STARLIGHT: Strains of big band music by Darrell Brewer’s Orchestra wafted over the terrace of the Huntington Library when Martha Jones, San Marino League president, and Ellis Jones, provisional chairman, welcomed a raft of league provisionals and their husbands. Among those new provisionals who will be docents at the Art Center College of Design and the Huntington’s Japanese Garden and studying ikebana are June Harwell, Anne Blomstron, Arlene Sheppard and Jean Summers.

CELEBRITY STYLE: Not every camp gets stars. Camp Rainbow in Malibu does. It’s the Amie Karen Cancer Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center camp for children with cancer and leukemia, which began a 10-day session Friday. A camp highlight will be the celebrity baseball game with actors Henry Pollack, Missy Gold, Tracey Gold, Sandy Duncan, Tom Hattan, Kim Fields and Peter Scolari.

UPCOMING AND PAST: Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center hosts its eighth annual Hollywood Open Golf Tournament on Aug. 24 at the Wilshire Country Club. It’s under the guidance of Robert C. Hill, HPMC Foundation chairman, who has scheduled a jazz-accompanied luncheon. Keith Renken, managing partner of Deloitte Haskins & Sells and president of HPMC board of directors, is tournament chairman. . . . A triple-decker boat leaves Fisherman’s Village in Marina del Rey on Aug. 28 for a Marina cruise sponsored by NJC for the Future, a chapter of the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine.
