A majority of Americans believe condom advertising is appropriate for television, according to a Media General-Associated Press poll. Nearly two-thirds of the 1,348 respondents in the nationwide telephone poll said TV stations should show commercials for condoms. Slightly more than one-quarter said they should not be shown, and 8% were unsure. Among those who support such advertising, 68% cited AIDS prevention, education or public safety as their reasons. The major networks have declined to accept condom ads, but many local stations have begun airing ads for particular brands as well as public service announcements promoting condom use.
