Commerce : City Water Rates Increased

Share

The Commerce City Council has approved a rate increase for the municipal water system that will boost the bill of the average residential customer from $14.30 to $19.15 per month, Finance Director John Mitsuuchi said.

The increase will bring the city’s water rates closer to those charged by California Water Co., the largest water vendor in the city. The Commerce Water Department serves more than 1,000 customers, while California Water has about 4,500 customers.

California Water Co. bills the average residential user $21.70 per month, Mitsuuchi said. The water bill for a large business served by Commerce would increase from $1,257 to $1,468; the private water company charges a similar customer $1,703, Mitsuuchi said.

The increase takes effect Oct. 1 and is expected to generate $242,000 per year in city revenue. During the last fiscal year, which ended June 30, the municipal water system lost nearly $100,000.
