Robbery Cited by Police as Motive in Jones Shooting

Robbery was apparently the motive for the weekend shooting death of a 20-year-old former Reseda High football player in Southwest Los Angeles, detectives said Wednesday.

Chris Jones was shot at 8:05 p.m. Saturday in his car about a block from his home as he and a brother were returning from playing basketball in Culver City, Los Angeles Police Detective Paul Mize said.

Detectives believe the killer, who still is at large, was trying to rob Jones of his customized Volkswagen Bug, Mize said.

After the Volkswagen pulled up behind another car stopped at a stop sign at 1600 W. 84th St., a gunman jumped from the other car’s passenger seat and approached Jones, Mize said.

The gunman “demanded that he get out of the car, and when he didn’t, he was shot,” Mize said. “The object of the whole incident was the car, not Chris Jones.”

Jones graduated from Reseda High in 1985 and was a starting wide receiver from 1982 to 1984.
