Marathoners take note. Twenty-six miles doesn’t cut it.

You want to run? Try this for size.

Mary Margaret Goodwin, a 50-year-old from Ventura, will attempt a 2,000-mile Himalayan trek in September. If she succeeds, she will be the first American female to complete the mountain-sized feat.

But that’s not enough for Goodwin. She also will attempt to break the record set in 1984 by two British brothers, Dick and Adrian Crane, who completed the Himalayan hell-run in 92 days.

Goodwin is no stranger to obscure sports challenges. She once swam across Santa Monica Bay in eight hours. She also mastered the Mackinac Straits and the straits of Messina and Gibraltar.

She ran 2,000 miles across four Japanese islands last year and claims to have been the first woman to run across Death Valley--all 134 miles.

Goodwin is scheduled to begin the Himalayan run Sept. 15, accompanied by Sherpa guides.
