New Rules for Crowded Skies

Share

It’s time to award the booby prize to the pilot who nearly collided with the American Airlines jet on Aug. 11 near LAX. We owe a debt of gratitude to this pilot, who witlessly and single-handedly has caused the sleeping behemoth known as the FAA to rouse from its torpor of pronouncements, studies and promises for 1990 or beyond--into immediate, emergency action.

The frightening flurry of near-misses across the nation has resulted in spine-chilling, extraordinary acrobatics in our crowded skies. The media has not yet been accused of whipping up the furor over air safety (or the lack thereof) because the grim facts speak for themselves.

Instead of telling us why not, let’s find at least one good reason why it can be done!
