Rams Camp : NFL Awaiting Explanation About White Arrest

Times Staff Writer

A spokesman for the National Football League said Monday that the league is waiting patiently for news on Ram tailback Charles White, arrested last Friday on misdemeanor charges of being under the influence of a controlled substance.

“Their team doctor will determine the situation and will report to our people,” Jim Heffernan, the league’s director of public relations, said. “Of course it’s something we’d like to learn about as soon as possible. We know that Charlie was in some trouble before.”

Ram Coach John Robinson had no comment or update on White’s situation Monday.

It seems that free agent tailback Gerald Harris has at least one thing in common with Eric Dickerson. Harris gained 91 yards in 31 carries against San Diego Sunday, the exact number of yards and carries that Dickerson totalled in his first regular-season start with the Rams in 1983.

Robinson was still fuming Monday over what he considered a late hit on quarterback Jim Everett by Charger defensive end Lee Williams late in the first half.

Robinson said that Williams hit Everett well after Everett’s pass had fallen incomplete.

“I was really peeved,” Robinson said. “I’ve got to fight for my quarterback, particularly since the whistle had blown four seconds before.”

Ram Notes Ram safety Vince Newsome missed Sunday’s game after learning of the death of his father, Thomas, 58, who was critically injured last week in an industrial accident. Newsome flew home to Sacramento and will remain there through funeral services, scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday in Vacaville at St. Mary’s Church. . . . A breakthrough? Rams general counsel Jay Zygmunt will meet today with holdout tackle Irv Pankey’s attorney in Beverly Hills. The Rams and Pankey are reportedly less than $60,000 apart on a two-year deal. . . . In four seasons, Eric Dickerson had never missed an NFL game because of injury before sitting out Sunday night’s game with sore hamstrings. Dickerson did miss two regular-season games in 1985, but that was because of a contract holdout. . . . Tackle Mike Schad, starting at right guard for the injured Dennis Harrah (calf), left the game in the second quarter with a concussion after a head-on collision with San Diego’s Jeffrey Jackson. “I’m all right,” Schad said afterward. “I just got KO’d.” . . . An already wounded Ram team escaped Sunday with only minor injuries. Nose tackle Greg Meisner and reserve linebacker Richard Brown reported slight hamstring pulls and Tom Newberry injured a finger. None of the injuries appears serious. . . . Robinson wants to make eight roster cuts by the end of the week. The team must reduce its roster to 60 players by Sept 1. . . . The Rams break camp today at Cal State Fullerton and return tomorrow to Rams Park in Anaheim. . . . Tight end Damone Johnson scored his first NFL touchdown Sunday on a 10-yard pass from quarterback Jim Everett in the second quarter.
